Josef Weiss Plastic GmbH

History

The company Josef Weiss GmbH was founded in Munich in 1949 by the toolmaker and master craftsman Josef Weiss. From the very beginning, the company has been specialized in the processing of metals and thermoplastics - especially the transparent PLEXIGLAS.

Back in 1956 already, the first aircraft canopies were manufactured. Due to the constant development of thermoplastic materials, Josef Weiss Plastic continuously expanded into further fields of business. Thus in 1972, a subsidiary was established in Hofolding (rural district of Munich), where the departments 'aircraft glazing' and 'vacuum forming' found their new domicile.
A further subsidiary, also based in Hofolding, was opened in 1997 for cutting processes.
Josef Weiss Plastic is equipped with state-of-the-art machinery, which supports up-to-date processing methods which are always reproducible.
Josef Weiss has the widespread reputation of 'making the impossible possible'. Accordingly, a slogan of former days is: 'Weiss weiß Bescheid' (a German wordplay, meaning: 'Weiss knows how to do it').

Being a commercial enterprise, Josef Weiss Plastic is specialized in supplying thermoplastic materials. Almost the entire range of Röhm's semi-finished PLEXIGLAS sheets, semi-finished Makroform materials made from MAKROLON, as well as semi-finished Lexan and Margard supplied by General Electric Plastics are always available on stock. Other types of acrylic glass, polycarbonate and a large selection of further thermoplastics are available.

Eventually in 2000, for centralisation purposes, a modern office building was set up next to the Hofolding manufacturing sites. All the administrative staff and equipment moved to Hofolding as well. The policy of the short distances is vital for a high level of flexibility.
While trade in Germany was generally slack back in 2003, Josef Weiss Plastic was able to expand further. The space in the production halls was no longer sufficient due to constant increase of the machinery assets. In the next neighbourhood an additional hall was set up for production. Manufacturing steps could be restructured and a higher level of efficiency was reached.

At the same time a central stock for semi-finished articles such as sheets, round rods, profiles etc. was established in Hofolding.
In the following year 2004, exactly 55 years after the founding of the business, the gates of the historic company were closed for good in Munich. Since then all sales, trade and manufacturing departments are based in Hofolding, near Munich. Despite the relocation, the spirit of Josef Weiss Plastic remains the same. Best quality, outstanding service and the importance of customer relationships are the values you can count on.
Since April 2007 Josef Weiss Plastic is also based in the Czech Republic. The subsidiary specializes in the manufacturing of aircraft glazing as both OEM and spare parts. The name is Josef Weiss Plastic s.r.o. The subsidiary is located in Kunovice, place of birth of the legendary Let aircraft.

Another expansion of the Josef Weiss Plastic group takes place in 2009. Plastique JW Inc / JW Plastics Inc is founded in Trois Rivières, Quebec (Canada). The initial operational focus will be to train new employees in the fabrication of moulds and the forming methods of glazing. Over the next three years the company will be gradually expanding their capabilities, introducing CNC milling, stamping, painting and other special processes such as the application of abrasion-resistant coatings.
