Materials Overview
We process and sell mainly two transparent plastic materials: acrylic glass and polycarbonate. Moreover we use rigid vinyl, Polystyrene and other thermoplastics. Below you find the main characteristics of acrylic glass and polycarbonate. For information on other thermoplastics, please contact our expert consultants.
Acrylic Glass or Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)
The first acrylic glass of the world was Plexiglas®, a brand made by the company Röhm. Up to the day we often talk about „Plexiglas“ when acrylic glass or even transparent plastic in general is meant.
Acrylic glass is available as cast or extruded material.
Some basic characteristics of Plexiglas®:
- absolutely colourless and clear
- break-resistant
- unexcelled weather resistance
- resistant against diluted acids
- easy processing, similar to wood
Numerous further characteristics are achieved by other Plexiglas® types, such as UV protection,
increased break resistance or IR reflection.
You are more than welcome to contact us for further information.
The main fields of application for the processing of Plexiglas® at Josef Weiss Plastic are aviation and automotive.
Further information on aviation grade Plexiglas® is available here: Plexiglas® for Aviation
Further information on Plexiglas® registered for road traffic is available here: Plexiglas® for Automotive
Polycarbonate (PC)
Polycarbonate is produced by extrusion and is therefore restricted in the processing methods.
Some major features:
- extremely break resistant
- high solidity
- high temperature resistance
- good optical properties
- hardly flammable and self-extinguishing
Numerous further characteristics are achieved by other types of polycarbonate.
