Materialien: Plexiglas® for Aviation Purposes
PLEXIGLAS® GS 241
Evonik Röhm, the company which invented the acrylic glass, has designed a material especially for the use in ultralight aircraft: PLEXIGLAS® GS 241.
Plexiglas® GS 241 prooves very good optical characteristics, exceeds the requirements of the usual aviation standards with regard to the maximum allowed transmission of UV radiation and is therefore ahead of the standard Plexiglas® GS 233.
Plexiglas® GS 241 takes advantage of the lack of certification requirements according to aerospace material data sheets for this field of application. It is therefore available at a significantly lower price than the established aviation materials Plexiglas® GS 245 and -249. In other words, Plexiglas® GS 241 is manufactured following the strict rules for aircraft-grade materials, but not every single sheet is checked as it is required for the approval according to aerospace material data sheets.
This material is available in clear quality or in different colours of high transparency.
Applying Plexiglas® GS 241 has the following advantages for you:
The glazing of your aircraft is made from a high quality material Plexiglas® GS 241 is, in comparison to the aircraft-grade materials Plexiglas® GS 245 and 249, a high quality material, which is available at a very economic price
Thanks to the higher quality you will be able to gain an advantage over your competitors.
Due to the refined characteristics of your aircraft glazing, the satisfaction of your customers will certainly increase
PLEXIGLAS® GS 245
Plexiglas® GS 245 is a polymerisation product, which is cast from methy methacrylate between high quality glass panes. It is available in clear quality or in different colours of high transparency.
The material meets high optical requirements and is available in different quality levels to meet the required optical deviation and distorsion. It is resistant to weathering and aging. Plexiglas® GS 245 is applied in passenger and sports aircraft and helicopters of all kind, but also in military aircraft. Blue-grey and green transparent shades are mainly applied for helicopter glazing for sun protection reasons.
PLEXIGLAS® GS 249
Plexiglas® GS 249 is a special grade of high-quality acrylic sheet approved for aircraft applications. Compared to GS 233 and GS 245 it offers superior crazing and solvent resistance as well as increased heat deflection resistance. Since GS 249 absorbs less than 2.2% of water, it is certified according to MIL-P-8184, Type I, Class II.
GS 249 can be properly stretched and is therefore the ideal material for transparencies in aircraft with pressure cabins. The processing methods are the same as for other types of acrylic glass, however it is vital to use polymerisation glue when bonding. Plexiglas® GS 249 is mainly used in military aircraft and helicopters. It is also the basic material for properly stretched transparencies. It is available in clear quality or in different colours of high transparency.
